PostSubject: FWD vs RWD   Wed May 01, 2013 11:33 am

When it comes to auto racing, there are many different styles, tracks, and series that use all types of drivetrains. It seems that front to rear is the optimum choice for the st class here at the FSCS. Is this due to the fastest guys run front-rear cars or because they are truly better? There are some mid to rear cars to choose from but it seems still, that the most popular choice is front to rear. I am interested to see why everyone goes with this option.

I don't know what will happen to spec, but I do know that when I get back into st I am running q fwd car. I have tested a few rear wheel cars and they are much faster. Since everyone goes rear wheel I will go front and see if they can compete. The way I look at it, with the pi system in place, no matter what I drive I should get equal lap times. Anyone who has run mixed field races should know that fwd cars run higher pi to keep up. My goal in running a fwd in a field full of rwd is to see at what pi I can compete. Hopefully I can gain some respect for the poor fwd cars. It seems that once you get past c class they just can't compete anymore.

So back to the original question, why so much love for rwd and none for fwd?

Also, I do not mean to offend the two racers in fwd at the moment. I have wondered this since last season and it seems that by now more people should have given them a shot. Its a big field and I commend you two for giving it a shot in cars that many consider to be inferior because of the drivetrain. Keep up the good work. The tracks we run are very large for this kind of car list. They would be much more suited for smaller tracks but since we run along side a large sportscar field, we get to run huge tracks as well.

i was going to run a FWD car in ST this season to prove everyone wrong until the SPEC class came. i wouldn't run a mid engine RWD car because they're way too fast.

Then why don't you run a fwd if spec gets shut down?

RWD is my slowest drivetrain, but I feel like to run a FWD car competitively in GS class I would need a 5-10PI boost which I probably won't get because I am already a reasonably fast driver.

GS and GT are rwd only. Only class able to run fwd is st. That's why I'm focused on it for this thread.

FWD shouldn't be that slow at 520 PI then, I reckon that 1:31s are possible in a FWD car round Road Atlanta at that PI. What do the RWDs get?

maybe piihb, i'd have to pick the car though :p but sabre, PI is specific to each driver but the base is the same no matter which drivetrain.

okay, let me rephrase. What can a 520PI RWD get around Road Atlanta?

Last season at like 515 in a silvia raceboy hit a mid 32 in qualli. 32's are around where i think the leaders will be this time, however its very possible to be faster.

thanks Smile I'm glad to be back.
I don't think FWD is too bad around some tracks, the '97 Civic is the B class leaderboard car for Road Atlanta with 1:30s. I think FWD can be competitive, some people just have their preferred drivetrains. I might build a FWD car to test on ST this weekend and if I do I will share my results in this thread (I'll probably put fairy line on Razz ).

That is impressive. I'm turning 1:33s in my fwd at Road Atlanta. My 95 cobra will run 31s.

I have no idea, I didn't look at the replay. FWD is still decent in this game at anything below 550PI.

I'm going to try build a Saab 9 3 and see if I can eventually hit a 1:31.xxx. Will report back, even if I fail.

1:32.946 in the Saab, and I am only getting slower each time I alter the build. This is harder than I thought Razz

I built up a Mitsubishi FTO to A520 and I got it to go around Road Atlanta in a 1:33.223, so a little bit slower than the Saab. But I got it around Laguna in a 1:36.464, which is one second quicker than the Saab around there.
I might hop in ST it the FTO, all I did it put on the handling parts, slapped in a turbo and put in the coolest looking aero. I hardly had to tune it too Razz

Wow I looked at last seasons results and saw that that time would have been pole position O.O so I tried the car at Sebring and I only got a 2:23.186. I guess I just built a handling car scratch

Some tracks work better with front wheel drive. Most tracks rwd is better but some are faster with the lighter fwd cars. I enjoy driving them. I have only races rwd except for one series that I ran fwd in touring cars. Its a cool twist for this series since its always been rwd cars. Now we have a chance to switch it up. I can't wait to get back so I can let everyone see how competitive fwds can be. See everyone again soon.

I can't wait until I see a FWD car outperforming the RWDs in ST.
On another note, I tried the Saab again around Hock and I was hitting 1:56s at my absolute max. I really want to get this Saab to be fast because I own a similar model in real life.
I think the best FWD cars at 520PI will be one of the Acuras or Hondas.
