The Detroit Bureau: How Chevy's C7 Corvette Plans to Take on Porsche, Ferrari
Chevy unveils C7 Corvette C7Vette
on Sunday night, at a well-attended ceremony, Juechter and Peters will get the honor of pulling the wraps off a 2014 Chevy Corvette that is already being hailed as the best American sports car of the past half century, perhaps the best ever.
Chevy unveils C7 Corvette C7Vette1
And as the car that has always served as a showcase of GM’s capabilities, the new ‘Vette could put a much-needed halo around a company whose critics still tend to dismiss it as “Government Motors.”
Chevy unveils C7 Corvette C7Vette2
TheDetroitBureau.com has spent a significant amount of time in recent months talking to the various members of the Corvette development team – and getting a rare look at what is known to aficionados as the C7, shorthand for only the seventh-generation model since the first fiberglass-bodied ‘Vette rolled off the assembly line in 1953.
Chevy unveils C7 Corvette C7Vette3
Those familiar with the current Corvette will recognize the new model, whether spotting it front or back. There’s the long nose, the steeply raked windshield that flows into a fast hatchback cabin. Quad tail lamps and exhaust pipes anchor the rear.
Chevy unveils C7 Corvette C7Vette6
But the distinctive new LED accent lights give the nose a more modern and refined look, with a mean-looking grille below the bumper split by a sleek chromed bar. The louvers on the hood are now functional, as are the ports behind the bulging front wheel wells. A crisp accent line darts rearward from the front wheels and leaves a spectator with the sense the car is constantly in motion.
Chevy unveils C7 Corvette C7Vette4
There are new rear quarter windows, something the Corvette hasn’t featured in decades. And the tail is crisp and precise with a higher belt line and deck that seems poised to pounce on the nearest Ferrari.

As striking as the body may be, team members agree that perhaps the most significant change comes inside. GM global design director Ed Welburn tells TheDetroitBureau.com that it was his personal mission to transform the traditionally clumsy and unrefined Corvette interior into a modern showpiece.

The new design features an 8-inch reconfigurable display that can rapidly be shifted to read out critical data in the mode a driver wants. There’s a second large screen for operating infotainment and other vehicle functions – though interior design team members point out they maintained a few buttons for commonly used features, such as tuning and volume control.

“For the first time,” says Juechter, “we decided to spend the money to design two different seats,” so those who want to spend time on the track don’t have to compromise with those who’ll never drive much harder than they would when blasting off from a stoplight.
Chevy unveils C7 Corvette C7Vette7
There’s one thing the new Corvette does reach into the past for. A closer inspection will reveal the word, “Stingray” on the fenders. That designation has been reserved for only the most powerful and exclusive Corvettes ever produced. And it’s back for the first time since 1967.

In some ways, team members will tell you, it may have worked out perfectly to have the C7 Corvette postponed until now. While it will bear a 2014 designation it actually will reach market almost precisely 60 years after Harley Earl’s original debuted.

And, adds Juechter, “There’s some truth that the longer you wait the better technology you have available.” The C7 is the showpiece “gearheads” long had to turn to foreign makers for.

Ultra-light, super-strong carbon fiber accounts for a significant portion of the new model’s body panels, though there’s still plenty of fiberglass, as there has been since the original ‘Vette debuted.

There had long been rumors that the new sports car would mimic its European rivals and migrate from the classic Corvette small-block V-8 to a turbo or super-charged V-6. In the end, GM stuck with a large eight-banger, though the newly designated LT1 features all the latest technologies, such as Direct Injection, variable valve timing and displacement on demand.

By shutting off half of its cylinders when demand for power is light, the engine essentially becomes a 3.1-liter V-4 and, asserts Juechter, “We wind up getting better mileage than if we had gone for one of those smaller powerplants.”

At the same time, the 2014 C7 Corvette will deliver an estimated 450 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, which will make it the most powerful “base” model ever – and the fastest, with 0 to 60 times expected to come in at or under 4.0 seconds.

And that’s just the beginning. There are other versions of the ‘Vette quietly under development, likely to include the step-up Z06 and the next-generation ZR1, which likely will reach well beyond 600 horsepower.

So the new corvette looks like a viper and then new mustang looks like an aston/camaro mix.
As for my rating of it, Hate the nose love the original tail.

The nose looks eerily similar to a certain Ferrari..458 without the wind adjusted flaps. Headlights are a near ripoff from the 458! Different shape same design in LED.

im confused, i thought that the ferrari had circular tail lights... ? those are square and there are two of them. that is closer to a camaros tail lights. and for the nose hmmm i still say its more like a viper. the way it is a bit of a rounded point.

For such a Corvette fan, how this car strikes me as...strange. How much does swapping the bulky pillars from the C5/C6 for the swooping metal piece with the quarter-windows affect stiffness? Visibility? I think that the rear portion of the cabin looks like what would happen when a Camaro and a GT-R have a baby. The LED strip on the headlights is a bit much for me and the chrome on the side vent seems off. The tail is nice, wish they would have kept circular tail lamps, and FOR THE LOVE OF GOD TURN ALL OF THAT BLACK PLASTIC AREA INTO A DIFFUSER!!! Ok, rant over.

it's definitely taken on some european and japanese characteristics...kind of disappointed in that aspect but it doesn't look too bad.

I didn't mention nothing about a tail section. Only the front. I was typing fast when I said 458 though. Here is what I meant....

Corvette

You can see how the headlights are similar, how the nose is similar, how the front grill/air intake area is very similar (Not exact but more similar than they are different by far). Even the overall shape is not too far separated.

However, I do think the look is one that will grow on people. Every time there is major change people hate it or dislike it at first. Then they grow to embrace it and like it. For the most part anyway.

ohhh okay much more sense. hmm honestly though i feel like the headlights for those are all so similar Sad which i would understand if it was just the ferrari and the viper seeing as the whole fiat thing. but hmm i cant get over how similar all three are. the shape of the front bumper everything. i wouldnt be surprised if you culd interchange them all with eachother and make a frankenstiened "Fervipette" sigh so much for three distinct cars...

BTW on that side view picture, take your hand and cover the entire front up til the windshield. its a camaro.

That being said, i wont lie xD turn 10 willing, i will drive this if it makes it to forza 5 lol.

no chance, Turn 10 has finished adding content and updating Forza Motorsport 4 (i.e. they are working on Forza Motorsport 5)

I know its on Gran Turismo has two C7 corvettes on it right now.

One in heavy disguise and the other in production form.

My Opinion on the Corvette C7 Stingray

Exterior

certainly looks more modern, but its not a design that I could call elegant like the C6 was.

I expect this car will not to age well (it will end up being a car where we will shocked people liked it back then in my opinion)

Interior

This is a vast improvement over the previous generation, but I would not say its a market leader in its class. Instead I would consider it a decent alternative to german alternatives.

Technical

Surprised about it having a 7 Speed transmission, rather than a 6 speed in the car. I do think it is a mistake personally considering Porsche has a similar system and its not actually been that popular, most 911 owners have been selecting the PDK option over the 7 speed transmission and reviewers are not keen on the 7 speed transmission in the Porsche in general. I think Corvette will need an automated gearbox with Paddle shift system that is decent to be competitive in the European market.

Its global potential

The corvette C7 has also been the 1st corvette that has been designed to be competitive in a global market, which it has been confirmed its coming to europe in 2014 and UK in 2015 with a right hand drive conversion (will be funny seeing a C7 corvette being sold next to Chevorlet badged Korean Cars).

In its current form I do not think it will do very well in the European market, because of the reputation american cars have in european market (with the exception of Ford) and new car buyers will be put off because of the lack of residuals this car will have, especially considering the Corvette I expect will not have as strong of an interior, not as good handling and not as good fuel economy as its european rivals.

These cars I expect will not be sold in large numbers in europe (I will be shocked if it goes past 1000 units in Europe)

The Name

What I am extremely against however is using the name Stingray, that name is very iconic with it being on what I believe to be the most attractive Corvette in history (I know some may contest that) and the C7 in my opinion does not deserve the name and badge. The name suggests its like the Mustang, Camaro and Challenger by being 'retro', which is logical considering the Stingray is the most famous corvette out of Chevrolet most famous brand. But the C7 is not retro, not even slightly.

I do not see what the issue was with just naming it the C7 Corvette.

Hate to say this but Ferrari was not first with that design.

Audi R8 2006

LED intergration into headlights and detailing inside the headlights was done much earlier than Ferrari.

I will admit Ferrari were the 1st to do it vertically but the style of lights have been around for a while

Nissan 350Z and 370Z does a have similar design to the Ferrari's as well (of course the Ferrari's are black and have more detailing inside)

Nissan 370Z - 2009

also Peugeot has had a similar(ish) design from 2006 (sorry could not resist that one)

In chevy's defense to some of the things tommy said. it is a fairly new venture to go to europe although they have had their hands in the asain markets. they also have that motor that you can switch to a v4. we will jsut have to see. it might be the novelty of finally beeing able to own a famed vette that draws in some of the richer crowd but thats just me. and i do know that what you said is true, that europe looks for different things than americans in cars.

found an image by accident of the alternative grill design for the C7 which will be mandatory for cars sold where front plates are required. (ignore the old guy have no idea who he is)

Chevy unveils C7 Corvette 011413_1

on what sainted said

The cylinder deactivation is helpful but its a 6.2 litre V8 - I am guessing combined mpg of 23 - 450bhp

compare its european rivals

Bentley Continental GT V8 - 4.0 Litre V8, combined mpg of 28 - 500bp

Aston Martin V8 Vantage - 4.7 Litre v8, 420bhp - combined mpg 21 (I know rubbish)

Porsche 991 Carrera S - 3.8 6 Cylinder, 400bhp - combined mpg 29

you get the idea the corvette only beats the Aston Martin in miles per gallon, but beats all I have shown except the Bentley in power (but expect the bentley is much slower)

I imagine in reality that corvette engine will be much worse in daily drivers just because of how much fuel it can take in.

I didn't mean to imply Ferrari was first with LED tech in its headlights. I was speaking only on the vertical design, shape of the headlights.

I feel like if you are buying a corvette or any of the other cars you mentioned gas mileage isnt a big concern for you. As for my views on the new vet, i dont really like any of the exterior but i like the interior

for US buyers not so much, but the price point the Corvette is in for the european market it does. This is because most of these cars are driven more often than their more expensive, more powerful alternatives and the people who tend to buy these cars buy them, because they cannot afford the more powerful, prestigious models of the car you bought (the exception is the Porsche 911 Carrera S of course for the time being).

This also means they have not got as much regular income to support running such a car, which fuel economy plays a large part in the running costs of such vehicles because lets be honest these cars will not be as likely to meet the mileage for next service but instead will have an annual service.

This also does happen this car dealership that deals with high end cars said quite few cars do return to be sold again because the owners cannot afford to run these cars which these cars are like Ferrari 458's, Lamborghini's etc.

I'm liking the style of the car, not so much of why they increased the angle of the Vette badge

I absolutely hate the nose and the tail. Everything in between isn't bad though. The interior may grow on me some but its not bad. Overall I like it. If the nose wasn't so vipery and the it didn't have camaro tail lights with a viper comp coupe tail end it would look great. I guess we'll see what minor changes are made to improve this over the course of this generation of corvette.
