Road Atlanta which is owned by ALMS and Panoz Motorsport founder Don Panoz is most famous for it being the crowning race of the ALMS season, The 12 hour Petit Le Mans. Constructed in 1969 out of a farmer's field in an area better known for oval-track racing, Road Atlanta has attracted some of the best North American race series to roar around a road course and has become home to The Forza Sports Car Series each season. With it's 12 turns, including the famous downhill "esses" and a very high speed downhill back straight this race will surely lend itself to some of the best racing of the season. With the competition heating up as the points picture slowly begins to develop and racers set sights on improving or holding their ground it is surely set to be a hotly contested race. Curbing is part of the track here at Road America and all tracks. There is no excess runoff area to contend with or clarify. So, in short tires cannot go off past the curbing. If I or track official can see dirt or grass between the track and your tire it is off track. Also, as with any track, Pit entrance is not considered racing surface. You can only use this area to enter the pits. Not to pass or constantly use as part of the racing surface.

OK thanks. That was a very clear and concise answer to a very confusing and wordy question.
There is only one thing I'm still not sure about: For this track, is the following also a true statement? "If you can not see dirt or grass between the track and your tire, then the tire is not off track, unless it is in the pit entrance or exit."
Saying that there is no excess runoff area to contend with at this track implies that the quoted statement is also true, but I just wanted to make sure.
Also, just my two cents, but If that quote is true, as I'm assuming it is, I would agree that this is the best way to look at it, at this particular track.

just making sure, going down the hill to the finish line, we're not allowed to put more than two tires over the orange dashed line? if so, there's no way people will go two wide there safely lol.

Now is it the tires? Or the car. As in...2 tires on the grass like u can have two tires over the line going into turn 12. This is starting to get confusing lol.

The way I understand it, you are allowed to have two wheels in the grass.

That is how I see it also. Most places are bad to do this anyways.

thats from what I know as well two wheels are the absolute max (I would not mind clarification on that one because turn 3 and 12 are easy to get two wheels on the grass)
I would say however cutting the corner by accident is fine so as long as it is does not gain you an advantage (i.e. overtake or line you up for a pass after that corner) and not a recurring theme which as pred said at indy '1 time ok no problem. 2 times in a row same corner warning. 3 times in a row penalty. 2 corners the same lap warning. 3 corners cut the same lap penalty' (Predator USMC).
I would say as well it is fine to cut a corner if its to avoid contact, however if this occurs I would recommend that you give that position back to the person(s) involved if they are still running (i.e. not limping back to the pits), if they are limping back continue as you are and do not consistently cut corners

Lol, yeah, I agree with turn 3, but turn 12?! All I can say is I can't wait to watch you race. That should be exciting.

I have done it a few times in practicing cutting turn 12 and if you do get it in a certain way it does not affect the time really and you do sometimes need to use it if you are going side by side in that corner

OK well, that's good to know. I'll have to try it myself now I guess. I still don't know if i'll try it with somebody on my outside, as that curb tends to throw my car sideways. Not the end of the world when I'm by myself, but it could knock me right into someone if they were out there.

Lol. Yeah, that probably is the difference. I'm sure that Aston has much better stability.

you got to remember as well the aston is heavier and has more even weight distribution which means it does not get as upset by curbs etc as much (but does mean your porsche has better rear grip at slow speeds however)

I would say at least 450lbs and a longer wheel base. Same reason why the Porsche has issues on the s'es after turn 4 going to 5

Yeah, I guess it's just like any other track. The drastic differences in our cars can make us run different lines.

Watch some of the race footage I posted and you can see the lines run. If you watch enough you will see some contact penalties being given and CRASHES...WHAAAAT They crash in real racing?! Yep. So, to ask that we have NO crashes with 50 plus racers each event is a far stretch. Love to have an incident free race but reality doesn't say it'll happen to often. All each racer can do is do his or her best to keep it clean.

Hmm oddly enough i ran a time..... faster... in a 650 pi version of my car than my actual pi... looks like i need some serious rebuilding
and turn 12 is a scary turn for me. to late and i wash out into the wall, to early and i put wheels in the grass and on the exit i will catch the rumble and get on two wheels ultimately sending me into the wall. its not fun.

You did get a PI change so you can change the build. If you did not of course you know you can't change the build. I have already warned one racer who got caught.
You can tune to your hearts content though.

yeah my PI changed, i know the drill. I still am not sure if it was the build or if for 1 lap i had channeled the inner racecar driver xD. tunes were identical.

LOL, on the inner race car driver. I wouldn't base anything off of one lap. Now if your consistently faster over 5 or more laps then you have found yourself a better tune and build!
